How NCEdCloud Works on Chromebooks?

Chromebooks are the most common student device in North Carolina public schools. NCEdCloud works natively in the Chrome browser that comes built into every Chromebook. When it configures a district-managed Chromebook, students and staff may find NCEdCloud set as the browser homepage or pinned as an app shortcut for NCEdCloud Chromebook Login.

Step-by-Step: NCEdCloud Login on a Chromebook

Sign in to the Chromebook with your district Google account (this opens Chrome OS).
Open the Chrome browser.
Navigate to ncedcloud.mcnc.org. It may already be your homepage.
Enter your NCEdCloud username and password.
Click Sign In.
If MFA is required, enter the code from the 2FA Authenticator Chrome extension or your phone’s authenticator app.
Your NCEdCloud dashboard loads with your application tiles.

Using the 2FA Authenticator Chrome Extension for MFA on Chromebooks

Students and staff who need MFA but primarily use Chromebooks without a separate phone can install the 2FA Authenticator extension in Chrome:

Open the Chrome Web Store.
Search for “2FA Authenticator” or “Authenticator.”
Install the extension.
Click the extension icon in the Chrome toolbar.
Scan the QR code shown in NCEdCloud’s MFA setup screen.
The extension now generates TOTP codes in the browser, eliminating the need for a phone.

This depends on your district’s Chromebook management configuration. Some districts configure SSO between Google Workspace and NCEdCloud so that signing in to the Chromebook also opens NCEdCloud automatically. Others keep the two logins separate. Contact your school IT coordinator to confirm your district’s configuration.

What happens to NCEdCloud on a Chromebook when the student returns it at the end of the year?

When the Chromebook is returned, the district IT team typically wipes or re-enrolls the device. The student’s NCEdCloud account is separate from the device and is not affected by the return. The student retains their NCEdCloud account based on enrollment status, not device ownership.

Can I use NCEdCloud on a Chromebook at home?

Yes. Log in to the Chromebook with your district Google account over your home Wi-Fi, then go to ncedcloud.mcnc.org in Chrome. NCEdCloud access from home works identically to school access. No VPN is required.

The 2FA Authenticator extension is missing from my Chromebook. How do I get it?

If the extension is not installed and the Chrome Web Store is accessible on your Chromebook, search for “2FA Authenticator” and install it. If the Web Store is restricted by district policy, contact your school IT coordinator and ask them to push the extension to your device through the Google Admin console.

Managed Chromebooks may have session timeout policies that close NCEdCloud sessions after a period of inactivity. This is normal security behavior on shared school devices. Sign back in when prompted. If you are being logged out immediately or after only a few minutes, contact your school IT coordinator.
