NCEdCloud RapidIdentity — What Powers the NCEdCloud Platform
What is RapidIdentity and How Does it Relate to NCEdCloud?
NCEdCloud RapidIdentity is the identity and access management (IAM) software platform developed by Identity Automation that powers NCEdCloud. NCDPI selected RapidIdentity to serve as the engine behind North Carolina’s statewide K-12 identity platform, handling account provisioning, authentication, single sign-on, and MFA for every LEA and charter school. See our full NCEdCloud Login guide for how this shows up in your everyday login experience.
In practical terms: “NCEdCloud” is the state’s branded name for the program, and RapidIdentity is the underlying technology that makes it work. You’ll rarely see the RapidIdentity name directly. Your login experience is entirely through NCEdCloud’s branded interface at my.ncedcloud.org. Read more in our detailed my.ncedcloud.org guide.
What RapidIdentity Handles Behind the Scenes
- Account provisioning — creating accounts from PowerSchool and Home Base data.
- Authentication — verifying usernames and passwords at login.
- Single sign-on (SSO) — issuing SAML assertions to connected applications. See our full SSO guide.
- MFA enforcement — managing multi-factor authentication, mandatory statewide since July 1, 2026. Learn more in the NCEdCloud MFA setup guide.
- Self-service password reset — powering the challenge-question-based recovery flow.
Why This Matters for Users
Understanding that RapidIdentity is the technology layer, not a separate system you interact with, helps explain a few things:
- Why NCEdCloud’s login screen and account management features resemble other RapidIdentity-powered platforms used by organizations outside education.
- Why documentation sometimes references “RapidIdentity” alongside “NCEdCloud. They’re describing the same system from different angles.
- Why account behavior (password rules, challenge questions, session timeouts) follows a consistent pattern across the whole platform.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I log in to RapidIdentity or NCEdCloud?
You log in to NCEdCloud at my.ncedcloud.org. RapidIdentity is the software running behind that login page. You don’t interact with a separately branded “RapidIdentity” website.
Is RapidIdentity the same company as NCEdCloud?
No. RapidIdentity is a product made by Identity Automation, a private software company. NCDPI licenses and configures RapidIdentity to run North Carolina’s NCEdCloud platform.
Does every NC school district use the same RapidIdentity configuration?
The underlying platform is shared statewide, but each LEA configures its own provisioning rules, application integrations, and MFA policies within that shared system.
Why do some error messages mention Identity Automation?
Identity Automation is the company that built RapidIdentity. Their name may appear in technical error messages, support documentation, or backend system references, even though your day-to-day experience is entirely through the NCEdCloud brand.
Can I contact Identity Automation directly for login help?
No. Support for NCEdCloud issues goes through your school or district’s help desk first, then escalates through NCDPI-managed channels if needed. Identity Automation doesn’t provide direct support to individual students, parents, or teachers.
