NCEdCloud Not Working — Complete Troubleshooting Guide

NCEdCloud is North Carolina’s statewide education login platform, serving roughly 2.5 million student and staff accounts across more than 300 North Carolina LEAs, including charter schools. When it stops working, the most common causes are expired passwords, browser cache issues, stale session cookies, or account configuration errors, not platform-wide outages. This guide covers every major error and fix, organized by the specific problem you’re seeing.

Is NCEdCloud Down Right Now?

Before troubleshooting your own device or account, confirm whether NCEdCloud itself is experiencing a service disruption. Platform-wide outages are rare but do occur during maintenance windows or infrastructure events.

How to check NCEdCloud status:

  1. Ask a colleague or classmate if they can log in. If others can access it, the problem is account- or device-specific.
  2. Try logging in from a different device or network, for example your phone on cellular data instead of school Wi-Fi.
  3. Check your school or district’s social media accounts; IT departments often post service alerts.
  4. Contact your school’s help desk for a status update.

If NCEdCloud is down district-wide, wait for IT to resolve the issue. There’s no independently verified public NCEdCloud status page; status information comes through district IT channels and NCDPI communications.

“The Request is Invalid” Error

This is one of the most common NCEdCloud error messages. It typically appears as a red banner or dedicated error page after you attempt to log in or click an app tile.

Why it happens: the SAML authentication request that NCEdCloud sent to the application, or received from a prior session, has expired or is malformed. SAML tokens are time-sensitive and tied to the session in which they were generated. A leftover cookie or a tab that’s been sitting open too long can trigger this error when you try to authenticate.

How to fix The Request Is Invalid:

  1. Close all browser tabs related to NCEdCloud and any connected apps.
  2. Open a new browser tab.
  3. Clear your browser cookies and cache for ncedcloud.org.
  4. Go directly to my.ncedcloud.org.
  5. Log in fresh.

If the error persists after clearing cookies, try a different browser (Chrome is recommended) or a different device. If it continues on multiple devices, contact your school’s help desk; the issue may be on the account or integration side.

“Invalid Credentials” Error

The Invalid Credentials error appears when the username and password combination you entered doesn’t match any active account in the system.

Most common causes:

  • Typing the wrong password (caps lock on, typo, or forgotten password)
  • Using the wrong username. Your username is your Pupil Number if you’re a student, or your State UID if you’re staff, and districts occasionally configure a variant format
  • The account hasn’t been claimed yet
  • The account was deactivated, such as after the end of a school year, an enrollment change, or a departure from the district

How to fix Invalid Credentials:

  1. Re-enter your username carefully. Check for extra spaces, wrong capitalization, or the wrong format.
  2. If you’re unsure of your username, ask your teacher or the school front office; anyone with a Help Desk role in NCEdCloud can also look it up.
  3. If your password may be wrong, click Forgot Password and reset it.
  4. If you’ve never logged in before, your account may need to be claimed. See our Claim My Account guide.
  5. If you recently transferred schools or changed districts, your account may need to be re-provisioned. Contact your new school’s registrar.

White Screen or Page Not Loading

A white screen or blank page when visiting my.ncedcloud.org is almost always a browser issue, not a platform issue.

How to fix a white screen on NCEdCloud:

  1. Open your browser’s clear browsing data dialog (Ctrl+Shift+Delete on Windows, Command+Shift+Delete on Mac).
  2. Select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
  3. Set the time range to All time.
  4. Click Clear data.
  5. Close and reopen the browser.
  6. Go to my.ncedcloud.org.

If the page still doesn’t load after clearing the cache, try these additional steps: disable browser extensions one by one, since ad blockers and privacy extensions frequently interfere with NCEdCloud’s JavaScript; try a different browser, since Chrome is the most compatible with NCEdCloud; check that JavaScript is enabled in your browser settings; and try from a different network, such as school Wi-Fi versus home broadband versus mobile data.

SSO Not Working (App Opens to Its Own Login Screen)

If you click an app tile on your NCEdCloud dashboard and the app opens to its own login screen instead of your account, the single sign-on handoff failed. This is different from not being able to log in to NCEdCloud; you’re already in NCEdCloud, but the SAML assertion didn’t reach the app correctly.

How to fix NCEdCloud SSO not working:

  1. Close the app tab.
  2. Return to your NCEdCloud dashboard at my.ncedcloud.org.
  3. Make sure you’re still logged in; if the session expired, log in again.
  4. Click the app tile again.
  5. If the app still opens to its own login screen, clear your browser cookies for both NCEdCloud and the application’s domain.
  6. If the issue persists, try using a different browser.
  7. If it happens for a specific app only, contact your school help desk; the SSO integration for that app may need to be reconfigured.

Don’t attempt to log in directly through the app’s own login screen using your NCEdCloud credentials. NCEdCloud passwords aren’t the same as the app’s native account passwords in most integrations.

MFA Code Not Working

If your TOTP code, the 6-digit code from an authenticator app, is being rejected, the most common cause is a device clock that isn’t synchronized with internet time. TOTP codes are time-based and become invalid within 30-90 seconds of being generated. NCEdCloud’s own documentation lists Google Authenticator, the RapidIdentity app, and Authy as officially supported TOTP apps.

How to fix NCEdCloud MFA code not working:

  1. Check your device’s date and time settings.
  2. Enable automatic date and time (Set automatically or Use network-provided time).
  3. Open your authenticator app and wait for the code to refresh; a new code generates every 30 seconds.
  4. Enter the fresh code immediately after it appears.
  5. If it’s still rejected and your app has a time-correction option, use it; Google Authenticator has this under Settings, then Time correction for codes.

If you’ve lost access to your authenticator app entirely, such as a new phone or a deleted app, contact your school help desk or LEA Administrator. They can reset your MFA enrollment so you can re-enroll on your current device. See our MFA Setup guide for re-enrollment instructions.

Account Locked

NCEdCloud accounts lock after a series of failed login attempts to prevent unauthorized access. A locked account returns an Account Locked message at the login screen.

How to unlock an NCEdCloud account:

  • Wait 30 minutes: minor lockouts from failed password attempts often clear automatically
  • Contact your school help desk: School Help Desk, LEA Help Desk, and LEA Administrator roles can unlock accounts immediately
  • Contact the front office or IT department in person or by phone, and bring a school-issued ID if asked

Accounts can also be manually deactivated by an administrator, for example when a staff member leaves. If your account was disabled rather than locked, only an LEA Administrator can re-enable it. Contact your district IT office in that case.

Student Not Found During Account Claiming

If you receive a Student Not Found or Account Not Found error when trying to claim your account, the roster sync hasn’t yet created your record in NCEdCloud.

How to fix Student Not Found during NCEdCloud account claiming:

  1. Verify your Username (Pupil Number or State UID) is correct.
  2. Verify your date of birth format is MM/DD/YYYY.
  3. Wait 24-48 hours and try again; the nightly sync from PowerSchool or Home Base must run before new accounts appear.
  4. Contact your school registrar and confirm your enrollment record is active in PowerSchool.
  5. If enrollment is confirmed but the problem persists after 48 hours, contact your school IT or LEA Administrator.

New students enrolled mid-year may also experience this issue. PowerSchool must be updated with the enrollment before the NCEdCloud sync can create the account.

App Missing from Dashboard

If an application your class uses isn’t visible on your NCEdCloud dashboard, it hasn’t been assigned to your account.

How to get a missing app added to your NCEdCloud dashboard:

  1. Confirm with your teacher which app should be available and whether it’s accessed through NCEdCloud.
  2. Contact your school’s help desk or school IT staff and request that the application be added to your account.
  3. If you’re an admin and the app isn’t integrated with NCEdCloud at all, the LEA Administrator must submit an integration request through the platform’s Requests module. See our Applications guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is NCEdCloud not working today?

The most common reasons NCEdCloud stops working are an expired password, a stale browser cookie, or a browser compatibility issue, not a platform outage. Try clearing your browser cache and cookies, then attempt login again. If the problem is district-wide, contact your school IT department for a status update.

What does The Request Is Invalid mean on NCEdCloud?

This error means the SAML authentication token expired or became invalid. Close all NCEdCloud-related tabs, clear your browser cookies for ncedcloud.org, and log in again from my.ncedcloud.org.

How do I clear my NCEdCloud cache?

In Chrome, press Ctrl+Shift+Delete, check Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, set the time range to All time, and click Clear data. Then retry my.ncedcloud.org.

Why is my NCEdCloud password not working?

Your password may have expired, be incorrect, or your account may be locked. Staff passwords are subject to periodic expiration; check the exact interval shown on your account, since it can vary by district. Use the Forgot Password link on the login screen or see our Password Reset guide.

What does Invalid Credentials mean on NCEdCloud?

This means the username and password combination didn’t match any active account. Verify your username, reset your password if needed, and confirm your account has been claimed.

How do I fix the NCEdCloud login loop?

A login loop, where you’re repeatedly sent back to the login screen, is caused by a corrupted session cookie. Clear all cookies for ncedcloud.org, close all tabs, and log in fresh at my.ncedcloud.org.

Can I use NCEdCloud in incognito mode?

Technically yes, but single sign-on may not work correctly because incognito blocks persistent cookies. Use a regular browser window for the best experience.

Who do I contact when NCEdCloud is not working?

Contact your school’s IT help desk first. For account-level issues, your School Help Desk or LEA Help Desk can assist. For platform or integration-level issues, the LEA Administrator contacts Identity Automation support.
